Species of Cockroaches Found in NE & NW Ohio
Throughout Ohio, there are four common species of cockroaches terrorizing commercial businesses and residential homes, they are; American Cockroach, German Cockroach, Oriental Cockroach, and Brown-banded Cockroach. Cockroaches not only can invoke shivers, jumps, and shrills, but they can also spread diseases, germs, bacteria and flare up allergies.
American Cockroach Infestations
American cockroaches are one of the bigger species of roaches skittering around Ohio and the most common. They have the potential of growing up to approximately 2 inches long. American cockroaches are brown and have wings. Though they have the ability to fly, it is clumsy and awkward, and being one of the known fastest animals, they prefer to run. These roaches prefer dark humid areas. When found in your Ohio home, they are usually in sewers, pipes, drains, and basements. If you spy American cockroaches outside, they will more than likely be under leaf littered trees, shrubs or rotting stumps or planters. If the gutters go unmaintained, American cockroaches can even make their way under the debris of gutters for warmth. American cockroaches are looking for convenient water and food sources, and will eat nearly anything, being more partial to fermented foods.
German Cockroach Control
German cockroaches are smaller and lighter than American cockroaches, only measuring ½”-5/8” and being tan to light brown in color. They too have wings, but do not have the capability of flying. They prefer warmth and moisture to dwell in. Like most cockroaches, they are scavengers and will consume starches, sweets, grease, and meat products. Garbage is often their meal source. As with other cockroaches, German cockroaches are nocturnal, and if seen during the day it’s due to high population, stress, and/or lack of food.
Oriental Cockroach Identification
Oriental cockroaches can grow up to 1 ½” in length. Also known as water bugs, they are black shiny and stout. Females are wingless, and males have short wings, although they do not fly. They need warmth during the cold Ohio winters, and if they can’t infiltrate your home, they will burrow under mulch, bricks or other vegetation. Being nicknamed water bugs, they favor high moisture and are typically found in basements.
How to Get Rid of Brown Banded Cockroaches
Brown-banded cockroaches are smaller yet than German cockroaches. They are attracted to dry, warm and higher elevations when finding a place to call home. Bathroom and kitchen cabinets and sinks and refrigerators are the more obvious places they hunker down. Brown-banded cockroaches are more than likely the cause of triggering allergies as they are more drawn to closer proximity to people. The best way to stop cockroach infestations in their tracks is to call Defense Pest Control!
