The Norway or brown rat is covered in brown or gray shaggy fur. The tail is shorter than the head to the body, and along with the tail, its ears are scaled. They can get up to approximately 15” long, and usually weigh just over a pound. They prefer to live underground, and will only investigate buildings in search of food. Being omnivorous, Norway rats will devour an assortment of food. Their preferred diet includes meats, fruits and nuts. Capable of hunting small fish and rodents, Norway Rats will also consume dead animals. They do require water and typically construct their nests and colonies near a water source. They breed year round, having 3-12 litters a year, with 4-22 babies at a time.

House Mouse Prevention & Control

The house mouse has short hair ranging from light brown to gray to to black in color, and their bellies are always lighter. They weigh in at ½ – 1 ounce and are just less than 8” long. In the outdoors and their more natural habitat, house mice make their homes in fields, grassy or wooded areas, where they construct nests close to convenient food and water sources. They will eat anything that’s readily available but lean towards the grains and nuts. The house mouse doesn’t hibernate, and when temperature drops, they search for warmth, which is often your Cleveland, NW and NE, Ohio area home or business. Being fairly small, they can easily infiltrate your building by squeezing through utility lines, pipe openings, gaps in doors, and anywhere else they can manage.
